DIY: Doing your own makeup

You’ve been thinking about the perfect dress and how you’re going to have your hair (up, down, up, down) , but what about the makeup? My only worry is that I don’t want to be orange. I’m quite pale so to avoid a makeup disaster I’ve made the decision to do it myself.

The Bobbi Brown session: As I’m not brave or skilled enough to do it without any help so I booked myself in for a ‘Bridal Beauty’ makeup lesson at the Bobbi Brown concession at John Lewis on Oxford Street (the store recommended by Bobbi’s ‘chat live’ online service).

I arrived early Saturday morning and was seated with the lovely Katie Clark. After a quick cleanse Katie starts on the hydrating, moisturising and priming of my skin. A great base is apparently the key. The next hour was filled with concealing dark lines (amazing under eye concealer!) and blemishes, a perfect match foundation and soft pink and brown colours for the lips, cheeks and eyes. The biggest take away for me was the big difference eyeliner makes. My eyes water at the thought of eyeliner, but we persevered and it was great. I was very happy with the outcome and came away with a better understanding of how to apply makeup and a few tricks! At the end of the session you get a detailed sheet of all the products used; very useful if you want to remember that perfect shade of eye shimmer that was used. I loved the makeup and was amazed at the match of the foundation to my skin tone, so most of the products have made their way on to my wish list.

Bobbi Brown has some great tutorial videos on her website like the ‘10 Step Make-up Lesson’ which are  perfect reminders or a good place to start if you haven’t tried a course yet.

If you feel like a makeup overhaul you don’t have to wait for a wedding. Also don’t forget to try out other makeup counters; I have seen great reviews for Dior, Benefit and Clinique.

Other online resources: There are loads of resources that I’ve bumped into online:

Amy Nadine, Lauren Conrad’s makeup artist, for the Beauty Department  gives a great run down of I DO Make-Up

Lisa Eldridge has some fantastic videos on her site…here is her bridal look

I highly recommend checking out Lisa’s other videos for some fantastic makeup ideas.

5 Make-up Wedding Day Makeup Tips

  1.  Its all about a good base, so make sure you use a great moisturizer and a primer. You want that makeup to last all day so don’t skip this one.
  2. If you’re anything like me waterproof eyeliner and mascara are a must.
  3. You want to look yourself, so keep the makeup natural and work with the wonderful features you’ve got.
  4. Practice! Its not one of those things you experiment with at the last minute. Its all about building up thin layers so take your time.
  5. There are soo many makeup brands available, so use ones you trust. High street brands are often just as good as high end.
